SimeLeague Basketball: Era Normalizing EFG%

The Problem: Older players are mostly unusable because their EFG% is so low. This is unrealistic as older players who were above the league average for EFG% in their time cannot compete with some players who are below league average EFG% today. There is a function built into the SIM that is supposed to deal with this called FG%+, but it has a very low impact to the point that you can’t even tell without advanced linear regression models.

The Fix: Create a more useful era normalizing statistic. This has been done with great success in Simleague baseball and the failure of it here results in leagues where there is maybe one guy from the 60s, a couple from the 70s, and two-thirds of the league is from the last decade. I don’t know the best way to do this and am open to suggestions.

Solution: robusk calculated the average 2pntFG%, 3pntFG% and FT% for the league for each season. Then he divided the players averages by the corresponding league average and multiplied by 100 (that is the baseball method). This is the resulting %+ for ever player in the WIS database:

This was written back in 2021 so the data is stale but the solution holds up, could easily be redone with a few minutes of work on an up to date player dataset - this is still useful for showing the general strategy.
