Update IQ to the same standard as other ratings (have potentials)

The current system of IQ is unchanged, as far as I can tell, since the beginning. Like ratings did back in the day, it just goes up slowly over time based upon a few factors like practice minutes and work ethic. It doesn’t matter what set you run, any player can become an expert in it with enough time.

In my time playing sports I, like I assume most of us, have played with someone who just never got the system. As well as guys who just always seemed to get it, regardless of the system, with little instruction. I don’t see why these sorts of player can’t exist in HD.

My suggestion would have two main points

1. Convert IQ to number values with potential

2. Make IQ more volatile than other ratings

The end targets of effect being

• Less upperclassman impact

• More flexibility in offensive and defense sets

• More variety in players, allowing smart players to have more of an impact

• rebuilds aren’t so IQ based

An example of an incoming freshman’s offensive IQs

Fastbreak: 30 (green)

Flex: 65 (blue)

Motion: 50 (red)

Triangle: 10 (black)

An IQ of 50 would be consider “average” meaning this player would be able to be an average player in motion and fastbreak (with the potential of more than than). A smart player in Flex but never be able to get Triangle.

If a coach didn’t practice a set, they would lose 20-30 points in a season perhaps needing to use 5-10 minutes of practice time to maintain a value and 15-20 minutes to increase. Which also could increase 20-40 points in a season, depending on work ethic.

I’d also consider the potential caps not being hard caps, so once they reached their potential they would still grown say 3 points per season. So in the above example, the player with a 65 Flex could be a 85 flex by the end of his freshman season with 20 minutes of practice, 88 by the end of his sophomore and 94 by the end of his career. That way there was still motivation to practice sets beyond reaching their potentials.
